Autumn is Calling

It is that time again, to prepare my post for this week's Watercolour Wednesday Challenge at Splitcoaststampers. This week the challenge is Watercolour Die Cuts.

I am using one of my favourite dies from Pinkfresh Studios. I have used it before as an outline die, i.e. taking the leaves out. But today, it is all about the colour of our Fall leaves.

I am working on Arches 140lb Cold Press watercolour paper and using Daniel Smith watercolours.

To do the background I first taped off the border using artist tape. Using Cascade Green which has that lovely blue in it, along with Jadeite Genuine and Serpentine I did this Wet on Wet wash, then set it aside to dry.

I die cut two sets of the leaves from my watercolour paper. On the first I used wet on dry with Quinacridone Gold. It is beautiful, as you can see with it peeking out from under the top leaves.

For the top leaves I used Jadite Genuine, Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Rose, Rose of Ultramarine, Alizarin Crimson, Pyrrol Scarlet, and Transparent Pyrrol Orange, Wet on Dry that turned into Wet on Wet, as I kept adding colour to get good saturation.

Using a pale blue cardbase I attached the watercolour background to the cardbase. I then glued on the bottom Gold leaf set and Nuvo Adhesive to 4 spots on the Gold leaf, giving it a couple of minutes to start setting up. I then set the top leaf set on the glue and let it sit until all was dry.

This holds the leaf off the bottom set a bit, but enough that adds to the dimension of the card. When I look at the card from the side you can see the difference in the heights.

To finish up I stamped the sentiment, which is actually half of the true sentiment. I actually had surgery on my stamp, cutting it in half so I could use the sentiment as I wanted, or part on the front and the rest inside. For this card I used the bottom part stamping with VersaFine Clair ink in Paradise.

And to finish up I added Crystal Drops in several colours.

I really like how this turned out, which is how I imagined it. Love it when that happens!

  1. Your leaves are so colorful and beautiful. When you stamp your sentiment onto wc paper how do you get a good clean image? I have tried using a positioner and still have trouble getting it dark enough. Any tips for me. Thanks.

    1. I have to say that it is all in the ink. I now only use VersaFine Clair Ink to stamp my sentiments. This particular card I did two passes using my Misti. It was good the first time, excellent the second, especially on watercolour paper like Arches. Highly recommended.
      Hope this helps, Kia
